The October League of Women Voters (LWV) meeting will feature a speaker from Project 515 - a group that has researched Minnesota laws and found 515 statutes that provide rights and assign responsibilities to couples based on the legal definition of marriage. As a result, these laws exclude domestic partners who aren’t married, even if they have made lifelong commitments. For gay and lesbian couples, marriage isn’t a legal option. But their families and children still suffer significantly from this unfairness. Having this information is important background as you consider the vote on the marriage amendment.
In addition to the speaker, there will be information and discussion about the history and content of amendments to the Minnesota Constitution. We’ll also have some discussion about how the process is different from Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Since statehood, 213 proposed constitutional amendments have been voted on by the Minnesota electorate and 120 of them have been adopted. Two proposed constitutional amendments will be on the ballot in 2012.
