Patch Picks: New Year's Weekend Events

Welcome to 2012, Twin Cities!

Is it already just a couple days away from 2012? If our calendars aren't pulling the wool over our eyes, this weekend is bound to be full of New Year's happenings across the Twin Cities. Planning on having more than one drink Saturday night? Leave the car at home and hop on the Metro Transit system, where rides are free from 6 p.m. until the last route. And, as always, in case you're still undecided about what you'll be doing, we've dug around and found five New Year's weekend events that should tickle your 2012 fancy:

1) "New Year's Eve" at Showplace Icon: A couple years ago, a horribly bad yet intriguingly mediocre film titled "Valentine's Day" came out, starring a barrage of celebrities ranging from talented to talentless. This year, everyone from Michelle Pfeiffer to Robert De Niro to the rapper Common star in the sequel, "New Year's Eve." If you're into romantic comedies, this might be worth checking out. Just to say you did.

2) Mark Mallman's New Year's Eve in 3D: Last year, Twin Cities-based musician/piano man/weirdo Mark Mallman had everyone's jaw on the floor when he emerged from the Varsity Theater's stage standing 11-feet tall on stilts, with keyboards attached to his arms, introducing 2011 to "Keyborg." This year Mallman is once again hosting a New Year's Eve bash—in 3D. Saturday night; 7th Street Entry; 9pm. $12. Folks whose tastebuds oddly intersect at Billy Joel, the early '90s sitcom "Perfect Strangers" and "Rocky Horror Picture Show" won't want to miss this.

3) IBEW Holiday Lights in the Park: If you're a regular reader, you've heard us mention this before. There may be no snow for the holiday lights to reflect off of, but the displays are still just as wonderful to see. And this weekend is the last time you can see them until Thanksgiving 2012. Head over to Phalen Park in St. Paul any time between 5:30 and 10pm. Prices start at $8.

4) : This delicious little coffee shop (formerly Harvest Moon) across the street from City Hall reopened its doors under new ownership two years ago this Sunday. To celebrate, Bean Good is hosting an entire day of music on New Year's Day, starting at 9 a.m. To add to it, their homemade waffles will be half price all day long. We recommend the Hearty Breakfast Waffle.

5) : It's been a little while since we mentioned something going on at ; probably because we can't keep up with the constant flow of talent that goes through the place. This Saturday night, swing by for live music from Stearns County 17 and Hitchville beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $50 for VIP.
