St. Louis Park Business Gears up for Winter

Advertising manager Ryan Anderson is helping Hoigaard's promote outdoor fun.

Winter is unavoidable in Minnesota. Despite the warmer-than-usual temperatures, snow is inevitable, and that’s exactly what one St. Louis Park business is waiting for.

“We are ready for the skiing and snowboarding season to begin,” advertising manager Ryan Anderson said. “We sell outdoor fun—what could be better than that?”

This enthusiastic father and ad guru started working for the outdoor sporting goods store four years ago, and says the allure of working for a family owned business drew him in.

“There was just something about working for a mom and pop store that I really appreciated,” he said.

Plus, Anderson says he gets to put his creativity to good use.

“With outdoor equipment you can do some really creative ads and campaigns,” he said. “It’s not like promoting other products that are a struggle to move off the shelves.”

Anderson also oversees the company website and uses social media as one of many tools to attract customers.

“In this day and age, businesses have to use technology to stay ahead,” he said. “Social media is certainly a part of that.”

When Anderson isn’t tweeting or looking into advertising space, you’ll find him outdoors.

“I would have a hard time picking a favorite snowboard spot,” he said. “The local spots like Hyland Park are fun, but the bigger resorts are nice as well.”

With a retail store located in the , off of Excelsior Boulevard, Hoigaard’s offers all the essentials for skiing and snowboarding.

“I think the biggest tip I can give skiers or snowboarders is to get properly fitted for boots,” Anderson said. “Having the right boots really makes a difference. For people starting out it can make or break the hobby.”

Carolyn Harris, an avid skier and customer at Hoigaard’s, agrees.

“It’s all about the boots,” she said as employees helped her find a new pair for the season.  “They really need to be sized and selected by people who know the sport, not bought at some big box store.”

Loyal customers like Harris are easy to find, since the store’s history dates back to 1895. Back then, the company made awnings and through the years wound up in outdoor retail. It’s that long history and commitment to customer service that keeps Anderson a proud employee.
