ST. LOUIS PARK, MN — In a second tweet this week, President Donald Trump called out the St. Louis Park Pledge of Allegiance controversy, saying “people are sick and tired of this disloyalty to our wonderful USA.” In the tweet, he also predicted the controversy is “why he’ll win Minnesota in 2020.”

The tweet is in reference to ongoing discussion by the St. Louis Park City Council on whether to recite the Pledge of Allegiance before council meetings. In June, the council voted unanimously to drop the recital of the Pledge from meetings, citing a desire to accommodate the city's increasingly diverse population.

However, after community feedback and protest, the council revisited the decision at a study session Monday night. Nearly 100 people attended the session, at times reciting the Pledge and waving American flags as they called on council members to resign.

Trump sent an initial tweet Tuesday morning, saying “outrage is growing in the Great State of Minnesota” and vowing to fight with protesters.

The St. Louis Park City Council will discuss the matter again on July 22, and will decide whether to reverse the decision or continue talks with additional community involvement.
