What's in a Softball Name? Hilarity

The St. Louis Park recreational softball season starts on Monday, which is awesome. But perhaps even more awesome then rec league sports are rec league names. If you’ve ever been on or managed a team, you’ll know what I mean—picking a clever handle is of the utmost importance. Same rule applies in fantasy sports.

To mark the beginning of the softball season, I figured I’d highlight my five favorite team names. Disagree with my list and think your team’s name got snubbed? You’re welcome to let me hear about it. Without further ado, the list:

• Bert’s Circles: Assumedly, this is a nod to Twins announcer Bert Blyleven and his propensity to “circle” fans with his telestrator (not sure why…maybe he gets bored during games?). Anyway, as someone who was circled once—and has the footage on tape to prove it—I have to pick this team name. The Circles will be playing on Tuesdays in the co-rec C league.
• 10 Catchers: And they all have bilateral leg weakness, unfortunately. This squad will be taking to the field—or the DL—on Tuesdays in the men’s C league.
• Underworked and Overpaid: Most people would claim to be underpaid and overworked, but these guys just like rubbing it everyone’s face, huh? They’re in the Monday men’s D league-orange.
• Sons of Pitches: Not the most family friendly name, but admit it—you chuckled just like I did when you saw this name. The almost-expletives are also in the Monday men’s D league-orange.

And taking the cake…

• Beer: This is what I saw on the league schedule I got, so I’m going to assume this team thought simplicity was best—or perhaps they're more concerned with post-game celebration than the games themselves. In any case, I think the simple handle works very nicely. This sudsy squad is in the Thursday co-rec D league.
