Police say a man burglarized a Woodbury home seeking money to bug drugs and stole a safe containing thousands of dollars.
A man has been charged with burglary after police say he entered a Woodbury home seeking money to bug drugs and a safe containing stole thousands of dollars. On Aug. 9 around 2:00 p.m., Woodbury police responded to a home located on Liberty Trail in Woodbury on a report of burglary. The homeowner told police officers, identified in the criminal complaint as “Boukal” and “Benysek,” that he arrived home and discovered the entry window was broken and his front door was ajar.
The victim stated he left for work shortly before 5:00 a.m. The only other person in the home was his girlfriend. When he arrived home, he entered through the garage door and observed the broken glass and open front door and then called law enforcement.
The victim accompanied the officers as they walked through the home. He identified the following items missing, including a Brinks safe containing social security cards and miscellaneous paperwork, $2,000 cash, credit card statements, a $100 savings bond, a diamond earring (valued at $600), a silver watch (valued at $350); Black Hills Gold baby ring (valued at $100); and other pieces.

When asked who would know about where the Brinks safe was located in his home, the victim said he, his girlfriend, and his cousin, Dustin Sorenson, 44, would know. The victim told the officers that Sorenson drove a Pontiac Grand Prix, has a drug problem, and has been known to steal before.
Officers spoke to the victim’s girlfriend, who said she let the dogs out shortly before 8:00 a.m. While outside, she saw an older model Pontiac Grand Prix parked several houses away. She then left for work.

Officers also spoke to construction workers at a nearby home. Both said they arrived at the worksite around 7:00 a.m. that morning and saw a white male in a silver sedan parked in front of the model home on Liberty Place. After 8:00 a.m., the male left.
On Sept. 6, the Bloomington police alerted Woodbury police that they had arrested Sorenson for a burglary and found his Grand Prix containing some of the victim’s property. Sorenson confessed he broke into the victim’s home because he knew he kept money in his safe, according to the criminal complaint. Sorenson said he needed the money to buy drugs.
