Rep. Craig Seeks $7.8M For Cottage Grove Infrastructure Project

Congress members can request funding during appropriations for up to 15 specific projects in their districts that "serve the public good."

COTTAGE GROVE, MN — Cottage Grove could receive almost $8 million for a project to improve pedestrian safety along 80th Street, which Mayor Myron Bailey called a “gateway for residents and visitors” to the city.

U.S. Rep. Angie Craig recently submitted a request for Cottage Grove to get $7.8 million to invest in the “80th Street Transportation and Infrastructure” project next year, she announced Monday.

Craig called the project a “perfect example” of how “investing in our infrastructure improves the safety of our communities.”

“These funds will provide some long-overdue upgrades and improve safety for thousands of pedestrians across Cottage Grove,” Craig said in a news release.

If granted, the funding would be used to upgrade traffic signals at major intersections along the corridor, which is the “largest and busiest” commercial and retail district in the city, according to the release.

The funding could also enable the city to replace failing infrastructure and make improvements to bring more areas in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the release states.

Mayor Bailey thanked Craig for requesting the funding to “move this project forward and ensure the continued vitality of the area.”

“The 80th Street corridor is the gateway for residents and visitors into the City of Cottage Grove,” Bailey said in the release. “Reconstruction of this vital transportation, commercial and residential hub is critical as our city continues to grow at a historic rate.”

Members of Congress can request funding for up to 15 specific projects in their districts that “serve the public good” as part of the appropriations process.
