Woodbury Middle School Students Donate to Local Food Shelf

"It is amazing what our students can do when they work together."

Seventh grade students at Woodbury Middle School recently held their 2nd annual Food Drive/Penny War. This event, which was coordinated by teachers Angela Hill and Erin Caughron, challenged all students in the school to donate non-perishable food items and spare change every day for one week.

Students publicized the event by creating posters, videos and making classroom announcements. Each day, seventh grade students counted the money and graphed the data. These graphs were then posted in the cafeteria for the whole school to see.

At the end of the week, coins were brought to Educators Credit Union, where they were counted. Over $1,135.80 was collected and a check was written to a local food shelf. The food donations weighed 762 pounds, and it took two full carloads to transport these items to the food shelf location, according to a news release.
