Woodbury Police Seeks Public Input on Body Cameras

The Woodbury Public Safety Department is preparing to launch a body camera pilot program for police officers and is seeking public input.

What you have questions or concerns about police body cameras? The Woodbury Public Safety Department is preparing to launch a body worn camera pilot program for police officers and is seeking public input about purchase, implementation, and draft policy.

Interested citizens are invited to attend a public forum scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 13, at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Woodbury City Hall, 8301 Valley Creek Road.

The public forum is intended to be a two-way conversation with citizens. Public input will be considered and used to guide and manage the BWC purchase, implementation and policy, according to a news release.

In accordance with the law, Woodbury Public Safety will also accept public comments submitted electronically at police@woodburymn.gov or by mail at 2100 Radio Drive, Woodbury, MN 55125, Attn: BWC Policy.

The last step requires the City Council to provide an opportunity for public comment at a regularly scheduled meeting. This opportunity will be provided at the City Council workshop on Jan. 18, 2017.

Key dates for Body Worn Camera Implementation:

  • Nov. 30: Begin receiving public comment.
  • Dec. 13: Host Public Forum. Public Safety staff to present plan, draft policy and purchase information to members of the public.
  • Jan. 18: Council Workshop. Staff to present plan, draft policy, purchase information and summary of public comments to Council. Council will receive additional public comment at this workshop.
  • March 1: Finalize policy, and prepare for implementation.
  • The pilot program is anticipated to run through 2017.
