2. Hattiesburg voters pack hearing to oppose redistricting plans (mississippitoday.org) — Hattiesburg residents packed a public hearing to challenge proposed redistricting plans they fear could weaken Black voting power and undo recent gains in local representation. The city's districts are central to whether Republicans gain a supermajority in the Mississippi Senate, and locals urged lawmakers not to change the maps again as a special session looms later this year.
3. Southern Miss Symphony Orchestra kicks off 107th season (wjtv.com) — Hattiesburg music lovers can catch the Southern Miss Symphony Orchestra's 107th season opener, "Opening Night!", on September 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus. The new "Iconic" season features seven concerts through May, including a Halloween-themed program, a holiday spectacular, a major choral work, and a Beethoven finale with the Hattiesburg Choral Union.
4. STEPPING UP TO SERVE: Hattiesburg firefighters revive pitbull rescued from burning home (darkhorsepressnow.com) — Hattiesburg firefighters rushed to a house fire on Ashford Circle Thursday night and found the home engulfed in flames, with no residents inside. Crews discovered a pitbull needing urgent care, carried it outside, and successfully revived it, though officials have not yet shared the cause of the fire or the dog's current condition.
5. Researchers capture 255 bats during three-night survey in south Mississippi (darkhorsepressnow.com) — Researchers and volunteers gathered in the Hattiesburg area for a three-night Bat Blitz, capturing and releasing 255 bats while surveying 39 sites across 10 south Mississippi counties. The project, led by the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and partners, aims to better understand local bat species and guide future conservation work that could affect area forests, parks, and neighborhoods.
