Jackson policy violation tied to rifle used in Queen Alexandria Lane killings (wapt.com) — Jackson residents are learning that a Jackson Police Department officer violated firearm storage policy by leaving a SWAT rifle in a patrol vehicle, from which it was stolen and later linked to a June triple homicide on Queen Alexandria Lane. Records obtained through a public request outline the rules the officer allegedly broke, while city officials and JPD have not yet answered questions about discipline or accountability. 
2. 63-year-old pedestrian struck, killed crossing I-20 (wjtv.com) — A 63-year-old man was killed early Monday while trying to cross I-20 near Gallatin Street in Jackson, according to police. Officers say a driver in a silver Chevrolet Cruze struck the pedestrian just before dawn, called 911, and stayed at the scene while first responders and investigators worked the fatal crash, which remains under investigation.
3. Filmmaker Curtis Nichouls dies, remembered for work to grow Mississippi's film industry (wapt.com) — Jackson's film community is mourning filmmaker Curtis Nichouls, who helped bring major productions like Bruce Willis' "A Day to Die" to locations around the city. Nichouls championed Mississippi as a filming destination and even proposed turning the former Dillard's at Metrocenter into a studio and training hub, aiming to create long-term opportunities for local film workers and students.
4. Hanging Death Investigations Mount (chicagocrusader.com) — Jackson readers should know investigators have not yet ruled on the death of Tasia Fortune, found hanging in a west Jackson neighborhood, while a city councilman has requested federal help. Her case is part of a broader pattern of disputed hanging deaths of Black people in Mississippi and beyond, with civil-rights advocates demanding more transparent autopsies, deeper investigations, and potential use of federal anti-lynching laws.
5. Courts Order Release of Billions in Climate Grants for Black and Underserved Communities (envirolink.org) — Billions in long-delayed federal climate and environmental justice grants may finally reach communities like Jackson which has struggled with unsafe tap water for years. Recent court rulings ordered the release of key funding streams, though appeals and administrative hurdles still threaten to slow how quickly any money could help Jackson residents and similar underserved areas.
