Tensions rise amongst increased water rates throughout the city of Meridian (wtok.com) โ Meridian residents will soon see higher utility bills after the City Council approved a 7% water rate increase, adding about $3 for water and $10 for sewer each month. Supporters say the hike is needed to fix aging water and sewer infrastructure, while critics argue the council should have used the water enterprise fund to ease the burden on residents, especially those on fixed incomes.

Meridian High Opens Student-Led Credit Union (queencitynewsfeed.com) โ Meridian High School has opened a student-led credit union on campus, giving Business Academy students hands-on experience in banking, customer service, and financial literacy. In partnership with 1st Mississippi Federal Credit Union, the program is the first of its kind in East Mississippi and supports Meridian Public School District's push for real-world, career-focused learning.

Inspired by generosity: MSU-Meridian nursing students create yearly scholarship (meridianstar.com) โ Two recent graduates of Mississippi State University-Meridian's nursing program have created a $1,000 annual scholarship to support future MSU-Meridian nursing students. Drawing on generosity they received, including awards that helped a Meridian ICU nurse avoid debt, they hope to ease financial burdens so others can focus on their studies and careers in patient care.

4. Lauderdale County unveils marker honoring first Black legislators (meridianstar.com) โ Lauderdale County has installed a new historical marker at the former courthouse honoring some of Mississippi's first Black legislators, including Meridian leader James Aaron Moore. The marker highlights Moore's service as a Meridian city councilman, his role in Reconstruction-era politics, and the violent backlash that forced him to flee the city, adding important local Black history to the public landscape.
