Today's riddle: What do you get when you cross an angry cow with an angry sheep? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Mayo Clinic Laboratories bringing $30 million investment, 234 jobs to Southaven (desotocountynews.com) — Mayo Clinic Laboratories is opening a major diagnostic testing facility in Southaven, bringing a $30 million investment and 234 new jobs over the next several years. State, county, and city incentives helped land the project, which leverages Southaven's proximity to Memphis International Airport and FedEx. Hiring has already begun for a range of laboratory, engineering, and leadership roles.
2. $23 million in fire rebate funds distributed to Mississippi's 82 counties, 294 municipalities (magnoliatribune.com subscription) — Southaven is set to receive $361,000 in state fire rebate funds, one of the largest municipal allocations in Mississippi this year. The money must be kept in a dedicated account and can only be used for fire protection needs like equipment, stations, training, and reporting technology, potentially strengthening local fire safety and emergency response for residents.
3. Caledonia, New Hope grab first wins of the season behind strong running game (cdispatch.com) — Southaven's football team dominated Columbus 41-0 at home, capitalizing on a shorthanded Falcons roster while giving younger Columbus players valuable game experience. The roundup also highlights strong rushing performances that powered first wins for Caledonia and New Hope, plus big offensive nights for Noxubee County, McAdams, Tuscaloosa Christian, and Oak Hill Academy across Mississippi and nearby Alabama.
4. Memphis man sentenced to life in prison for 2021 Covington, TN, homicide (localmemphis.com) — A Memphis man has been sentenced to life in prison for a 2021 shooting after Covington, Tennessee investigators tracked him to Southaven, where he was arrested and the murder weapon was recovered. Southaven Police also assisted in the multi-agency investigation. The case stemmed from a deadly ambush after a Covington High School football game that left one woman dead and another injured.
5. The data center backlash comes for SpaceXAI's Colossus (scientificamerican.com) — Southaven residents living near SpaceXAI's massive gas-turbine power site are grappling with constant noise, air-quality worries, and lawsuits as the company powers its Colossus AI data centers just across the state line. Neighbors in Colonial Hills and nearby streets describe sleepless nights, health concerns, and falling property values, while city and state leaders tout billions in investment, new jobs, and tax revenue tied to the project.
