β€œHe’s the first multiple time state champ for the school,” coach Frank Valleroy said. β€œIt’s huge.”

Kraus edged past Olsen with a 3-2 overtime win. β€œHe’s one mentally tough son of a gun.” Valleroy said.

Tim Niewald finished second overall in the 171-pound bracket. He lost to Ozark’s Cody Lindsay.

Denny Kleinschrodt placed third overall in 125-pound weight class.

Holt finished tied for 28th place with 20 points.

Francis Howell Central finished in second place with 126.5 points.Β Earlier this season senior Terrel Wilbourn lost to Blue Spring’s Keenan Hagerty, so Saturday’s rematch in the state championship was his shot at redemption, according to assistant coach Chris Wehmer.

But midway through the bout Wilbourn went down, clutching his knee. It appeared that his chance to win a third state title might be over.

β€œHe’s had a problem with his knee all year,” Wehmer said. β€œHe strained some ligaments. He sat out a portion of the year.”

The senior refused to quit. He finished the match favoring his strong knee and went on to win 6-3.

β€œThis kid’s one of the hardest workers in the room,” Wehmer said. β€œHe’s a very mentally tough kid. He wanted this more than anything.”

What Wilbourn showed Saturday night was exactly what Wehmer said made him the team’s leader.

β€œHe’s like the foundation of the program,” Wehmer said. β€œThe whole room revolves around him. Other kids see his work and they want to be like T. He showed a great example there.”

Ben Henson of Francis fell to Hazel Wood West’s Antoine White in the 119-pound championship. While Henson maintained control for the early portion of the match, a late push by White led him to a 502 victory.

Senior Matt Greene placed third in the 171-pound weight class.

Mehlville finished tied for 42nd place with three points.

Lindbergh finished tied for 13th place with 38.5 points.Β The atmosphere surrounding the two has changed quite a bit, but Lindbergh AD Mike Slyman has been coaching his son since he was five years old.

Back then, they were wrestling in the basement. Saturday night, the now junior in high school won his first state championship.

β€œWe were in the back and I told him to just have fun,” Slyman said. β€œThat made it nice. I know he was calm, and I was calm, too.”

Michael defeated Timberland’s Jesse Freise 2-0 in the 152-pound bracket.

β€œThis was the goal all along,” Slyman said. β€œWe set that goal at the beginning of the year, and he stayed on track.”

It wasn’t the first goal the father and son have accomplished together, and it probably won’t be the last.

As Slyman said: β€œIt was awesome.”

Northwest finished in 15th place with 38 points.Β Nick Tufts fell to Lee’s Summit West’s Evan Boehm in the 289-pound title match.
