Carthage Municipal Pool closure leaves summer plans in limbo (fourstateshomepage.com) — Carthage’s only all-ages outdoor municipal pool will not open Memorial Day weekend because of a leak and safety concerns, and its entire summer season is now uncertain. City and YMCA leaders are scrambling to reassign hired lifeguards and may open the Central Park Wading Pool instead, with the Carthage Public Services Committee set to discuss options Tuesday.

2. Carthage R-9 School Foundation recognizes local scholarship and contest winners (carthagenewsonline.com) — Carthage High School seniors just received a record-breaking $264,000 in scholarships, with the Carthage R-9 School Foundation alone awarding over $107,000 from 32 sources. The Foundation also wrapped up the long-running Flanigan Speech Contest and Helen S. Boylan Art and Writing Contest, spotlighting dozens of Carthage students for standout speeches, artwork, photography, and writing.

3. Crowder Quill magazine published, winners announced (blogspot.com) — Carthage creatives are well represented in this year’s Crowder Quill, with local students and staff earning top honors in photography, digital art, and 2D art. The long-running Crowder College literary-art magazine just released its 45th anniversary edition, announced scholarship-winning entries, and outlined new contest categories that will shape opportunities for Carthage-area writers and artists starting with the 2026-27 cycle.

4. Serious crash causes car to veer off Hwy 59 up an embankment, out of sight, in Fidelity (koamnewsnow.com) — Emergency crews from Carthage Fire and Jasper County responded Friday afternoon to a serious two-vehicle crash at Burr Oak Road and Highway 59, just south of the I-44/I-49 cloverleaf. One northbound vehicle veered up a steep embankment and out of sight, and three people were taken to the hospital with injuries not yet detailed. Investigators from the Missouri State Highway Patrol are still working to determine what happened.

5. Volatile week ends with lower cattle futures (wlj.net) — Carthage producers saw a busy sale Monday as Joplin Regional Stockyards moved 11,343 head, with feeder steers and heifers trading in a wide range from slightly higher to notably lower than the previous auction. Benchmark 701‑pound steers brought $400–$405, averaging just over $402. This local snapshot came amid a volatile national cattle market, with futures sliding even as some cash prices strengthened.
