Tanger Kansas City at Legends

To celebrate Earth Day, Tanger Kansas City at Legends invites the community to donate their used sneakers – any kind, size or condition – to support its new recycling program. Shoppers can give back by donating a minimum of two pairs of shoes at The Lawn from noon – 4 p.m. on April 24 and 25. Sneakers collected will be recycled through Tanger’s partnership with <a href="https://tracking.us.nylas.com/l/7980bf7de8004b3799901f1f00324a74/1/a6c597e6d626bc7324cc7d75704fa42c800e9a5458c2e4d0af480aa1154fe89c?cache_buster=1775572085" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Sneaker Impact</a>, repurposing them into rubber material for future soft play surfaces and other usable products. Guests who donate will receive a special offer for&nbsp;20 percent off&nbsp;top brands like Under Armour and Old Navy.
The center is also teaming up with Piper High School to expand its Earth Day efforts even further. As part of Tanger Kansas City’s sneaker recycling program, donation bins will be placed at the school throughout the week of April 20 – 24, encouraging students and faculty to contribute sneakers in any condition for re-purposing.
Tanger will also collaborate with Piper High School’s Earth Club to support the creation of a new pollinator garden, including a donation of trees that will be planted by students and the Tanger Kansas City at Legends management team on Earth Day, April 22.

Passion. Dedication. Fortitude. Leigh Kakaty is the embodiment of these three qualities, and for good measure, too. For two decades, he has needed to mine the deepest of reserves in order to drag Pop Evil up from the blue-collar grassroots of the band’s local Michigan scene to stand proud at the top of the modern rock game. Soaring successes, bitter defeats… Leigh Kakaty has stood face-to-face with it all along the way. Leigh Kakaty has survived it all.
What Remains, the band’s eighth full-length album, is the culmination and story of this journey with Pop Evil, laid bare like never before. Continuing in the recent vein of 2023’s acclaimed Skeletons album, What Remains is both sonically and thematically Pop Evil’s heaviest ever offering; a thundering collection of arena-ready modern rock and metal hits in which Kakaty opens heart, mind and soul – pulling no punches and taking no prisoners in doing so. “There are a lot of issues and things that I’ve dealt with in this journey of Pop Evil that I’ve buried for a long time,” the frontman explains of this document of resilience, perseverance and accountability.
Pop Evil was born in North Muskegon, Michigan in 2001, Kakaty drawing on the lessons of a youth first shaped not by music, but by high school basketball – leadership, team work, the drive to improve in the lonely hours put in at the gym at 5am, the will to win suppressing any fear of defeat – in order to fight tooth and nail for their break-out moment.
“I was hustling and learning every day to make my dreams come true,” Kakaty recalls of his time playing local bars and slinging early EPs out of the back of his truck. “Studying never interested me. Neither did getting a regular job. A knee injury wrecked my shot at playing sports. Music was all I wanted to do from that moment, and I didn’t give myself a backup plan. Pop Evil gave me a purpose, and a reason to get up every day. It became a crusade.”
Lipstick On The Mirror, their 2008 debut, and its follow-up War Of Angels brought acclaim and global attention; 2013’s Onyx delivered the first of the band’s nine No.1 singles and six RIAA-certified gold and platinum plaques, but also a period of darkness brought on by the grief of Kakaty losing his father. “I was completely lost … I had just missed the last five years with my dad, chasing this dream when I could have been with him. I didn’t know if I wanted or could do Pop Evil any more,” Kakaty admits today. The band’s 2017 self-titled album, opened by the smash-hit “Waking Lions”, was written “pretty much to save my life” – but in turn “reminded me of the fire I have inside, and that God put me here to make music that could help people.”
It’s a mission statement enshrined in Pop Evil to this day – and which provided the spark for the genesis of What Remains.
“You’re always chasing that one song that can connect with that one person,” Kakaty says. “And that process has to start with yourself. There’s a lot of personal healing on this record, a lot of things I wanted to get out for my own mental well-being. I’m finally at a place where I can confront my demons.”
For Kakaty, that one song is What Remains’ title track. Produced by Wage War’s Cody Quistad, the track began life with the chorus’ opening words: “I never meant to hurt you / violence, my only virtue”. “I was writing those lyrics to everyone that has been a part of the Pop Evil journey, inside and around the band, but also to myself,” Kakaty says. “It felt like an enormous weight was lifting, and those two lines led to some powerful and personal healing. When we had that song, the vision for the album came into focus immediately. It’s an introspective collection of chapters in my journey, and what I’ve been through to reach where I and Pop Evil is today. It’s everything I’ve never known how or felt able to say – until now.”
It should come as no surprise, then, that What Remains runs the full gamut of emotions. Opener “When Bullets Miss” is a defiant war cry aimed at those who have sought to take their pound of flesh – or worse – across the past two decades. “Knife For The Butcher” and “Wishful Thinking” take a hard look at how the source of trauma and the road to recovery often begins within. “Side Effects” ruminates on how “sometimes the best things in life are hard to attain until you rid yourself of things weighing you down”. “Criminal”, meanwhile, is an ode to trusting your own instincts and “following your own path” – regardless of outside opinion.

Zachary William "Bill" Dess, known by his stage name Two Feet, is an American singer, songwriter, and producer from New York City. A multi-instrumentalist, Dess is one of the few artists today who writes, plays, sings, and produces all his own music in his studio. Reviewers have called his music “mesmerizing” and noted his “silky vocals, low-key beat.” He is a blender of genres and makes some of the most raw and original, emotionally alive music today.

The platinum success of Sing the Sorrow blazed a path for a generation of hardcore-punk weaned bands to similarly crossover. 2006's Decemberunderground upended expectations again and earned AFI a second platinum plaque. Crash Love was another adventurous turn, with expansive and almost optimistic-sounding melodies, glistening with emotion. The haunting Burials arrived four years later, debuting in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200. The self-titled follow-up, commonly referred to as "The Blood Album," became AFI's second-highest charting album since their inception, debuting at No. 5 in 2017. “Tim comes from a different culture, different taste, different sort of musical firmament,” Lyle says, “and what we have in common is that we like good songs.”
Lyle got his start in the folk song traditions of the American south. Raised by a music minister and mobile home salesman, he cut his teeth as an entertainer leading the choir in a small town Methodist church. Dreaming big, he moved to Paris after high school and studied philosophy. When he returned to follow his musical passions in Atlanta, he found his folk sound gaining attention with major labels who sought him to write for stars in LA.
That’s how he first met McEwan, who was raised not in the bright lights of Hollywood but in Denmark. His own father is a drummer, both parents are actors and entertainers, and they supported McEwan’s musical passions, as did his country. A state-funded program helped the budding producer hone his skills. After graduating, he moved to London and had a hit on pirate radio, but it was years later in Copenhagen that he’d find success with the publishing team that brought him to the U.S.
Lyle and McEwan connected from the moment they first met in a Los Angeles studio. What was meant to be a session for others turned into pure creative spontaneity. The new friends stumbled onto a sound all their own, penning “We Move Forward” in a few hours time. The song became a favorite on The Midnight’s debut EP Days of Thunder, released in 2014.
Within that single’s euphoric rhythms and bittersweet synth lead are the seeds of The Midnight’s signature style. It’s powerful and hopeful, matched with Lyle’s romantic and philosophical observations of everyday feeling, a theme that continues on the intimate sonic portraits that Heroes paints.
A dramatic, nostalgic streak runs throughout their catalog, from the retro-futurism of debut LP Endless Summer through to the introspective musings of 2018’s Kids. That sound got bigger and brighter as The Midnight dug into even deeper emotional depths on 2020’s Monsters, finding more confidence in their songwriting. The pair was even tapped to score for a major motion picture, and although the project did not come to fruition, it further proves the band’s decidedly theatrical energy.
Through the years, the band’s sound and presentation continues to evolve, as influenced by the live performance and connection with the audience as by the internal need to grow.
“As a creative process, it's always a ‘what feels new and fresh to me?’” McEwan says. “That's the challenge, right? Or at least for me, how my process is. It has to feel fresh yet familiar for it to feel exciting to feel creatively fulfilling.”
McEwan’s sonic tinkering is further pushed by Lyle’s lyrical explorations of self and situation. Faced with the birth of his first child, Lyle became fascinated with the development of ego and psyche, setting forth on the ambitious aim of a conceptual three-part album epic.
“I got into depth psychology and this idea of etiology, the way a human forms,” Lyle says. “The world doesn't get better but we do. We grow into ourselves. We grow into our voice … For me, Kids is self-knowledge, Monsters is self love, and then Heroes is empathy.”
Written during the isolation of COVID quarantine, Heroes faces the feeling of being alone by inviting the whole world to dance under one roof.
