Kansas City Hazardous Waste Facility To Close For End Of Year Maintenance

Now would be a good time to finish cleaning out your garage. KC Water’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facility at 4707 Deramus Avenue is about to close for two weeks.

It’s the end of year closure. KC Water crews perform maintenance work clean out the facility of all waste to get a final number of the year.

The last day for drop-offs will be accepted Saturday, December 14, 2019. Until then, Kansas City residents and those who live in 32 other participating communities can drop off paint, light bulbs, motor oil and other items for free on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Wednesdays are set aside for loads larger than 600 pounds and an appointment is necessary.

Among the items accepted for drop-off is paint. KC Water recycles that paint and makes it available to customers. Beginning January 1, 2020 the price of a 5-gallon bucket of recycled paint increases $5 to $30.

In 2018, customers dropped off 1,645,765 pounds of products which was a 7,344 pound decrease over 2017.

“In 2019 so far we have brought in 1,689,152 pounds with 5 days of drop offs remaining. We could possibly bring in over 1.7 million pounds this year,” said Rob Fort, KC Water Environmental Manager for HHW.
