On a brisk Friday afternoon, KC Parks and City officials joined together with Northland residents to officially open the Big Shoal Creek Trail. The new 2- mile trail connects N Chouteau Trafficway on the west to N Brighton and NE 55th St on the east. It joins neighborhoods in both KCMO and Gladstone to the Antioch Crossing development and allows for kids to bike/walk to Ravenwood Elementary via Brighton sidewalks. Additionally, it connects to Penguin Park and Lakewood Greenway and areas south of 1-35 via the roadside path along N Jackson. The project is a great example of interdepartment cooperation with KC Parks, KC Water Services and the City Manager’s office all involved. Other facts:

  • Contractor – National Streetscape
  • Project Manager – Rodney Riffle, KC Parks
  • Length of trail – Nearly 2 miles
  • Number of street crossings – Two at grade crossings (N Cypress and N Jackson) and two under road crossings (N Indiana and N Brighton)
  • Cost of the improvements – $2,098,207.50
  • Water Services installed a new water main through the greenway in 2018/2019. This opened a pathway for creating the trail design by the City Manager’s Office with Parks and Recreation executing the plan.
