Construction on Walnut Street began this week to reopen the road as a two-way street from 3rd to 5th Street through City Market.
The project is expected to wrap up next spring and improvements include: a new roadway opened to two-way traffic, a new pedestrian plaza and seating area, and new City Market signage. Additionally, Walnut St. will remain open to pedestrians-only on weekends — vehicles will still have access during the week.

“The goals of this project are to provide better access and visibility for businesses, improve traffic flow in City Market, and promote a pedestrian friendly environment. We are excited for the outcome,” said Claude Page, Senior Planner with the City Planning and Development Department.
All businesses in the area will remain open during construction and there will be minimal impact to City Market parking during the process. Additionally, KC Streetcar operations will not be affected by construction.
This project is a partnership between the KCMO Public Works and City Planning and Development Departments, Port KC and City Market. Funding is provided by special obligation bonds.
