The first of four ‘Heart to Help’ events will be held on Saturday, May 22, at the Robert J. Mohart Multipurpose Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Food, personal-care items, diapers and more will be provided by Harvesters. Five pallets of food - roughly 10,000 pounds - and other household items will be distributed on a first come, first-served, drive-through basis. We expect to be able to help approximately 100 families.

“KC Kindness was created by city employees who decided now was the time to serve the community in a unique way,” said Leranda Brewer, KC Kindness organizer in the Neighborhood Services Department. “Our goal is to assist needy Kansas Citians by providing volunteer and supplemental services. Through our four ‘Heart to Help’ events, we want to make it a little easier for Kansas City, Missouri, families to meet their needs.”

Three other events are planned this summer, with additional support from the city’s Community Action Network (CAN) centers and several local businesses and non-profit organizations.

“We’ve looked for opportunities throughout the pandemic to work with social-service agencies to help identify ways to ensure that our residents who are most vulnerable to these hardships are still able to obtain the basic necessities they need to live,” City Manager Brian Platt said. “With that in mind, I’m very proud of our employees who are giving their time to help with this noble cause.”

Residents needing support can visit the “Help for Residents” page on the City's website,KCMO.gov, or call the United Way resource line at 211 to be connected with social services. The city also has information about funding for emergency rent and past due utility bills at KCMO.gov/renthelp.
