New Kansas City Initiative Aims To Keep Historic Northeast Clean

In a first of its kind program, the City and Northeast Alliance Together (NEAT), a program of the Mattie Rhodes Center, are joining forces to tackle one of the biggest issues in the Historic Northeast -- improper trash disposal. To help combat the problem, a City staffer will work from the center three days a week, helping neighbors keep the Northeast clean.

“Solid Waste Inspector Travis Silvers will be here at Mattie Rhodes, working with us and our neighborhood leaders on our illegal dumping, landlord set outs and general trash issues,” said Scott Wagner, NEAT Director. “We hope by partnering with him and the Solid Waste Division, we can start to change the way people view trash in our area and set a new standard.”

Silvers will be at the Mattie Rhodes’ office from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. The Mattie Rhodes Center is a Northeast-based organization improving individual and family well-being though a variety of social service and arts-based programs.

“We think this pilot program can really make a difference,” said Michael Shaw, solid waste division manager, “especially in a targeted area, like Northeast, where we have had illegal dumping and trash issues.”
