Our Solid Waste Services Division and Bridging the Gap, our recycling partner, have some new recruits in the effort to promote recycling throughout Kansas City. Girl Scouts of Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas have joined the team just in time for National Recycling Day on Sunday, Nov. 15.

In honor of National Recycling Day, our three recycling centers (4707 Deramus, 5200 E. Red Bridge Rd. (71 Hwy/I-49 and Red Bridge. Rd) and 6401 NE Pleasant Valley Rd. in Pleasant Valley Park) will be open Sunday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with area Girl Scouts on site to encourage everyone to ‘Go Green.’
“Girl Scouts of Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas are passionate about the environment and want to keep Kansas City, not only clean, but green,” said Shannon Dooley, Solid Waste Services marketing and customer care manager. “Bridging the Gap and the Solid Waste Services Division are always looking for ways to expand our outreach and partnerships within the community in terms of recycling and I can’t think of a better partnership than with the Girl Scouts!”
According to the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), nearly 70 percent of what Americans throw away daily can be recycled. And that would make a huge difference in Kansas City.
“The scary reality is Kansas City’s one and only landfill is filling up and it’s filling up fast,” Dooley said. “We need to extend the life of that landfill and divert as much recycling material as we can.”
For more information about the initiative, contact Dooley by email . Media can contact Neighborhoods and Housing Services Department Communications/Community Liaison John Baccala at (816) 513-3202.
