I was just looking at the National/American League Standings and thought I should post the following facts.
In the National League East the top three teams
Atlanta 96 Wins and 66 Losses
Washington 86 Wins and 76 Losses
NY Mets 74 Wins and 88 Losses
Total 256 Wins and 230 Losses.
In the National League Central
St. Louis 97 Wins and 65 Losses.
Pittsburgh 94 Wins and 68 Losses.
Cincinnati 90 Wins and 72 Losses.
Total 281 Wins and 205 Losses.
In the National League West
Los Angeles 92 Wins and 70 Losses.
Arizona 81 Wins and 81 Losses.
San Diego 76 Wins and 86 Losses.
Total 249 Wins and 237 Losses.
In the American League East
Boston 97 Wins and 65 Losses
Tampa Bay 91 Wins and 71 Losses
Baltimore 85 Wins and 77 Losses
Total 273 Wins and 213 Losses
In the American League Central
Detroit 93 Wins and 69 Losses
Cleveland 92 Wins and 70 Losses
Kansas City 86 Wins and 76 Losses
Total 271 Wins and 215 Losses
In the American League West
Oakland 96 Wins and 66 Losses
Texas 91 Wins and 71 Losses
Los Angeles 78 Wins and 84 Losses
Total 271 Wins and 221 Losses
If the World series was decided upon win/lost record then St. Louis, 97 wins 65 Losses, would be facing the American League top team Boston, 97 wins and 65 Losses. If you go by Division then NL Central 281 Wins and 205 Losses would play AL East 273 Wins and 213 Losses.
Why go through all the hassles of play-offs? Add them up and see if you can find a different score. Let me Know.
