SCC Announces Black History Month Events

(SCC) will host a variety of events in honor of Black History Month in February. The events include two lectures, a musician and an international film showing. They are all free and open to the public.

SCC BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENT SCHEDULE:

All events will take place in the auditorium of the Social Sciences Building unless otherwise noted.

• Frank Meeink Lecture: A Former Skinhead’s Fight Against Prejudice at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7. Meeink will share the story of his descent into America’s Nazi underground and his ultimate triumph over hatred and addiction. A book signing will follow the lecture.

• Bobby Norfolk: Storytelling for All Ages at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8 Norfolk is an internationally known story performer and three-time Emmy Award winner. He makes his characters come to life through imaginative and creative storytelling, while highlighting the African-American experience.

• David Kirton Concert at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the Plaza Bistro in the Student Center. Kirton is a vibrant/modern roots reggae singer from Barbados whose music is a unique hybrid of rock, pop and reggae.

• “Throw Down Your Heart” Film Screening at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23. “Throw Down Your Heart” (2008), an African film in English, follows well-known banjo player Bela Fleck on his travels to Africa, where he learns about the instrument’s origins.
