As the 2014 - 2015 basketball season begins, expectations are once again set high for the Panther basketball squad. The team hopes to win a third straight conference title and compete for the district championship. The Panthers will be led by four year starter Zach Glotta, who recently signed to play basketball at Austin Peay University. Glotta has been an “All-Conference” selection in each of the past three seasons. He is the son of Panther coach, Charles Glotta. The Panthers also return starters Kris McCann and Justin Fitzpatrick. McCann is a two year starter who is expected to take on a more prominent role in scoring this season. Fitzpatrick is known for his defensive toughness, in addition to his ability to run the floor and finish at the rim. Ryan Daniel, a three year varsity player, is expected to take on a more prominent role as a starter this season. Coach Glotta believes Daniel to be an extremely quick guard. He will be a key to the Panthers success this season. Newcomer Austin Schwerdt, coming off a successful AAU summer campaign, will provide the Panthers with added scoring. His 6’5 frame brings length to the Panther defense. Also expected to make key contributions this season are: Jared Jadwin, Sam Bartlett, Blake Wilson, and Nick Navatto. They are all post players that should give the Panthers versatility inside. Each member of this group brings something different to the team; rebounding, scoring, and defense. Rounding out the team are Brendan Orf and Tyler Krech, two key reserves at the guard position. Each brings toughness, hustle and energy off the bench. On a dissapointing note, the Panthers will be without the services of Tre’ Johnson this season. Johnson, a key reserve last season, was injured during the Panther football team’s recent playoff run.
The Panthers opened the season with a 73 - 46 victory over conference rival Fort Zumwalt East. The Panthers return to action this Friday (12/5) as they play host to Fort Zumwalt West. Tip-Off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
