FZN Winter Sports Update

An update of Panther winter athletic teams.

Boys Basketball

The boys basketball team is off to a 3 - 1 start this season. The team recently finished 2nd in the Marshall Tournament. At Marshall, the Panthers defeated the host school and Sedalia: Smith-Cotton before falling to Jefferson City in the finals.

The team has been led by Jermaine Bell, Marco Powells, Alex Owns, and King Rue who all have double digit scoring averages.

Girls Basketball

The girls basketball team is off to a hot start this season as the girls currently post a 4 - 0 record. The team will play this Friday in the finals of the Whitfield Tournament against the host school. Next week the Panthers will host their own invitational tournament. The girls have been led by the efforts of Tori Nesslage (13 ppg), Dajah Robinson (10.7 ppg), Rachel Pudlowski (12.3 ppg) and Emily VanHooser. VanHooser provided the most thrilling highlight so far this season, as her last second shot sealed a Panther victory over highly regarded Warrenton.

Wrestling

The FZN wrestling team split a pair of matches last week against Oakville and Rockwood Summit. The Panthers defeated an undermanned Oakville squad 63 - 12 before falling to Rockwood Summit 36 - 32. Last weekend the Panther grapplers competed in their own 17 team invitational meet where the team finished in 4th place. Jack Ederer (152) and Nik Steele (285) claimed individual title for the Panthers. Derrick Buda-Smith (132) and Brenden Keeling (170) finished second at the tournament.

Girls Swimming

The Swim Cats were defeated in recent meets against St. Dominic and Timberland. Despite the recent set-backs the team looks to have a strong season. A core group of seniors led by captains Amber Parkinson, Camille Seeger, and Abbie Wilp look to lead the way for the Panthers. Defending conference champion Michaela Russ, along with Cicely Berzack, Hannah Simonds, and Jordan Brown look to add stability an experience to the youth-full Panther line-up.
