Grimes to continue family legacy!

FZN Senior Katie Grimes to play basketball at Fontbonne University.

FZN Senior Katie Grimes recently committed to play basketball at Fontbonne University located in St. Louis. Grimes was a member of the FZN girls basketball team that experienced a revival this past season capturing both the conference and district titles. The Panthers, who won 21 games during the season, had not won a conference title since 1982 or district title since 1983! Grimes was a steady presence at the point guard position and a key to the Panthers success. A fixture in the Panther line-up the last three seasons, she led the team with 37 3-point baskets. An honor-student who sports a 4.2 GPA, Grimes has been a member of the GAC Central “All-Academic” team for the past three seasons. She was the recipient of the GAC "Sportsmanship" award this past school year. A two-sport athlete, Grimes was also a member of the Panther volleyball team.

By committing to Fontbonne, Grimes follows in the footsteps of both her father and brother. Grimes father, Tim (the Activities Coordinator at Fort Zumwalt East) was a member of the first varsity basketball squad at Fontbonne in the late 1980’s and early 1990's. While brother, Tyler (a four-year member of the Griffin baseball team) recently graduated from the school. At Fontbonne, Grimes plans on majoring in secondary education with hopes of becoming a high school teacher and coach. She comes from a long line of coaches in St. Charles County. Both her grandfathers (Les Grimes – Fort Zumwalt North and Gary Foland – St. Charles West) were long time high school coaches in St. Charles County. Her father, Tim, coached basketball and baseball at Fort Zumwalt South before becoming an administrator in the district.

Fontbonne is a NCAA Division 3 member school and competes in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
