Lady Panthers hitting their stride on the Pitch!
FZN Girls Soccer braves the tough spring weather and their opponents.
The FZN girls soccer team is off to a strong strong start this spring. The Panthers won their two most recent contests, notching victories over neighbor Christian High (3 - 1) and conference foe Liberty (3 - 1) for their 7th and 8th wins of the season. The Panthers have been led on offensive by Belle Govero (4 goals - 5 assists), Mackenzie Menke (4 goals - 4 assists), Aliyah Tucker (3 goals - 3 assists), Mara George (3 goals - 2 assists), and Claudia Hoff (3 goals - 1 assist). The defense is anchored by sweeper Chloe Overkamp, goalie Maggie Pagano, defensive-mid Kaylee Judy, Skylar Gooch and Anna Beezly. Head Coach Jackie Layne , in her 7th season as head coach, stated "We have a lot of potential with this group." "We've played really well at times, if we can see a full 80 minutes of playing to our potential then we can compete with anyone on our schedule."
It's been a unique spring for the squad, who has often played in less than ideal conditions. Team member Mikayla Meiser said that being, "determined" and "mentally strong" are some of the keys to playing in such foul weather. Bell Govero added that "communication on field" has been a big factor in the team's success thus far. Although the Panthers field a relatively youthful squad, with only a handful of seniors, Chloe Overkamp commented on the fact that, the team "is playing together and bonding more this year as a group." This has been a contributing factor to the strong start for the Panthers.
The Panthers compete in the always tough Gateway Athletic Conference. One of the premier leagues for soccer in the state. They hope their tough schedule helps them prepare for District action. Fort Zumwalt North will serve as the host for the Class 4 District 4 Tournament a field that includes: Francis Howell, Fort Zumwalt West, and Timberland to go along with the host Panthers. The District Tournament will run from May 14 - May 16.
