This week (12/17 – 12/21) the FZN girls’ basketball team will host their own 8 team invitational tournament. The “Lady” Panthers will enter the tournament as the 3rd overall seed behind local area powers Francis Howell Central (1) and St. Charles: Lutheran (2). Other teams included in the field are: Fort Zumwalt East, Pattonville, Francis Howell North, Hazelwood West and Hazelwood East. Games are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday with games being played at both Fort Zumwalt North and Fort Zumwalt East High Schools. Last season the Panthers finished 3rd in the event. Francis Howell Central, FZN, and Hazelwood West all enter the tournament with undefeated records. Fort Zumwalt East, coming off their best season in school history, and Lutheran enter the tournament with just one loss.
After four games this season, the Panthers remain unbeaten with a 4 – 0 record. The team has notched victories over Warrenton, Francis Howell North, Parkway West and rival Fort Zumwalt West. The squad hopes to continue the success of last year’s team, a team that captured both the conference and district titles. Three starters from last year’s team are back this season: Jaden Stahl, Jordyn Grimes and Jessica Clausner. Stahl and Grimes were both “All-Conference” performers a season ago. In addition to the three returning starters, the Panthers return Jerrica Moody, Claudia Hoff, and Grace Bauer who all saw significate minutes last season. Key newcomers that have emerged include defensive specialist Kaylee Judy and Kylie Orf. This season Stahl (14.5 ppg), Clausner (9.5 ppg) and Grimes (9.5 ppg) have emerged as the team’s top offensive threats. Moody averages 6 ppg. Head Coach Dusty Weiskopf, when asked about the keys to the team’s hot start stated, “The girls have a great attitude and work ethic. They are quick learners and play hard.”
