McGurk's Takes Lead in Quest for Best Steak

It is with  a full stomach that I share my latest findings in O'Fallon Patch's quest for the . This week I decided to take the challenge to the next level. After I took a look at my user comments for this week's place to try, I called up a friend who is in culinary school to help me break out the microscope on our next contestant. We hopped in the car and headed for , located at 108 S. Main Street. 

Arriving for an early lunch, we were seated right as we walked through the door. We were marched right past a large bar into the dining room which also contained another nice sized bar. A drinking establishment, is what I would tag this place, but they also have a wide variety to choose from on the menu. 

After looking around at what they have to offer, I landed on the 10 ounce top sirloin. The dish came with mashed potatoes, green beans, carrots and steak butter, all for around $15-16. My friend who tagged along with me was excited by the opportunity to “co-judge” food. He himself is quite an accomplished cook and was looking forward to seeing the work of others.

I took a quick glance around to see what type of place we were in and found a well decorated “pub house," down to the dim lighting and vintage sporting memorabilia covering the walls.

When our dishes arrived, I was  impressed to see that for a place I would label as a bar, presentation was tip-top. Our steak came atop a mound of mashed potatoes, with green beans and carrots cut into strips to allow for a very nice presentation. Add to that a sprinkle of spice around the rim of the plate -- my friend was also impressed by the presentation.

Digging in, I was overwhelmed by the taste that came out of this steak. I see now why O'Fallon Patch readers recommended it. This piece of meat, by far outranked the steak I enjoyed at . I quickly consumed just about everything on my plate with no need for A1 sauce (the steak comes with a nice gravy sauce that greatly complements the potatoes).

All in all, I think we have wrangled a new first place leader in our culinary challenge. If you are looking for a great steak, great atmosphere and a plate that will fill your stomach, head on down to McGurk’s, heck, I might see you there, because I definitely will be back!
