Panther Wrestling and Swim and Dive teams wrap up seasons

Hickey earns "All-State" honors in wrestling.

The FZN Wrestling and Girls Swim and Dive teams recently wrapped up their 2018 - 2019 seasons. The Girls Swim and Dive team completed an outstanding season that saw the "Swimcats" complete a 14 - 2 dual meet mark. The Panthers also finished 2nd in the GAC North/Central meet for the second consecutive season. A school-record number of individuals participated in the state swim meet for FZN this past season. Those individuals include: Jillian Walls (200 Free Relay), Maya Walls (200 Free Relay), Lauren Schwartz (200 Free Relay), Trinity Smallwood (200 Free Relay), Jordan Brown (200 Medley Relay, 400 Free Relay), Averi Meade (200 Medley Relay, 400 Free Relay), Nadia Wuest (Diving), Maddi Watters (Diving), Sydney Kelsey (200 Medley Relay, 400 Free Relay, 100 Breaststroke), Gwen Raziq (200 Medley Relay, 400 Free Relay, 50 Free, 100 Free). Raziq was the only Panther swimmer to qualify for the final round at state. She fell just short of a medal (Top 8) by finishing 11th in the 100 Free. The Panthers competed in MSHSAA's large school division (Class 2).

The Panther wrestling team advanced three individuals: Zoe Santa-Cruz (131 lbs.), Teddy Hickey (126 lbs.), Derrick Buda-Smith (152 lbs.) to the state meet. Hickey, a 3X state qualifier, was the lone Panther grappler to earn "All-State" honors. Hickey finished 6th and was the only Panther senior to compete at state. He finished his career with a 132 - 34 overall record. Santa-Cruz was the first female from FZN to compete at state for the Panthers. She won one match against two losses at the tournament. Buda-Smith, making his second state appearance, finished 0 - 2. This was the 3rd season for the Panthers to compete in the MSHSAA large school (Class 4) division.
