Reckel to “sprint” for the Griffins!

FZN Senior Chris Reckel to play football for Fontbonne University.

FZN senior Chris Reckel recently committed to join Fontbonne University’s first ever “Sprint” football program, slated to begin action in the fall of 2022. The versatile Reckel was a stand-out player for the Panther football team last fall, leading the team with 18 touchdowns. A two-way starter, who played multiple positions on the offensive side of the ball, Reckel earned “All-Conference” recognition for his play at the wide receiver position. Reckel led all FZN receivers with 66 catches for 466 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also rushed for 507 yards on 30 attempts with 8 touchdowns. Reckel was a key player for a Panther squad that won it’s 8th consecutive conference title last fall. At the conclusion of the season, Reckel’s versatility was recognized by the state coach’s association, which garnered Reckel with 3rd team “All-State” status.

“Sprint” football is a relatively new sport to the Midwest, but was first introduced on the east coast in 1934. Sprint football follows all the standard American football rules, including an 11-on-11 player format, the sport takes a different approach to playing the game. Illustrative of its name, sprint football emphasizes speed and agility, thereby offering a faster-paced style of play. The main differentiator lies within the weight requirement of each player: 178 pounds or less. Similar to wrestling, players will weigh in before each game to ensure they are within the weight limit to play.

Fontbonne will join 5 other Midwest universities, including Quincy University (Illinois), Calumet College of St. Joseph (Indiana), St. Mary-of-the-Woods College (Indiana), Bellarmine University (Kentucky), and Midway University (Kentucky). to form the Midwest Sprint Football League.
