August 2023 Daughters Celebrate Constitution Week with Displays

The National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress in 1955 to set aside Sept. 17 to 23 annually to be dedicated to observe Constitution Week. National’s resolution was adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on Aug. 2, 1956.

Under the direction of Mary Jo White Anderson and Debbie Roberts, Constitution Week Chairmans, and committee members from the John Sappington Chapter will place Constitution Week displays throughout the community in libraries, churches, schools, banks and nursing homes beginning September 1st. Bells across America will ring loud and clear on September 17 through September 23 for Constitution week in locations everywhere to commemorate our Constitution.

The goal of the celebration is to emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution; to inform people the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life; and to encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.

"We must remember and teach, those who wrote the Constitution believed no government can create freedom, but government must guard freedom rather than encroach upon the freedoms of its people" stated Diane Antonacci, Chapter Regent. "The Constitution by itself cannot guarantee liberty".

"Constitution Week is the perfect opportunity to read and study this great document which is the safeguard of our American liberties. Look for displays throughout the community."
