September is Cholesterol Education Month
Controlling your cholesterol is imperative to your health
ST. LOUIS: September is Cholesterol Education Month. MediNurse, St. Louis’ premier provider of private duty nursing care and health related services for more than three decades, reminds the public, especially the elderly, that maintaining balanced cholesterol is critical to your overall health.
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is found in all cells of the body. The body requires cholesterol to function properly. Cholesterol is found in some of the foods we eat, but our bodies also make it naturally. The body uses cholesterol to produce hormones, vitamin D, and substances that help to digest foods. Unfortunately, cholesterol can build up on the walls of arteries— the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to other parts of the body—causing plaque. Over time, plaque can cause a narrowing of the arteries, potentially leading to stroke or heart attack.
Thankfully, there are significant ways to prevent high cholesterol:

Watch what you eat. Certain foods have types of fat that naturally raise your cholesterol level. Cholesterol is found in foods that come from animal sources; for example, eggs, meat, and cheese. If a medical professional has already diagnosed you with high cholesterol, it is best to eat these foods in moderation.
Monitor your weight. Being overweight increases your total cholesterol level.

Increase your level of activity. Lack of regular exercise can lead to weight gain, which raises your cholesterol level. Maintaining an exercise regimen is critical to your overall health, especially as you age. For seniors, approximately 20 minutes of cardio activity every day is recommended.
There are no signs or symptoms of high cholesterol. Many people don’t even realize their cholesterol level is too high until they see a medical professional. If you are 20 years of age or older, it is important to have your cholesterol level checked at least every five years. Of course, it is always best to consult your doctor and determine exactly how often your cholesterol level should be monitored.
