St. Louis Teen Charged As Adult In Carjacking Killing Of NY Grandfather

The defendant was 16 when the murder-robbery occurred.

ST. LOUIS, MO — A teenager faces murder and robbery charges related to the carjacking death of a New York grandfather visiting Saint Louis to see his new grandchild. Richard Donaldson, 17, of St. Louis County, was charged as an adult with second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree robbery and other charges, all felonies.

Police said Donaldson and two other individuals allegedly robbed Kenneth Spalter, 72, of Pound Ridge, NY,and his wife Feb. 10 around 10 p.m., the Journal News said.

Spalter was shot by one of the robbers while struggling over his backpack, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch said.

Neighbors came to Spalter’s aid, but he died before being taken away by paramedics.

Donaldson, who was 16 at the time of the killing, was also charge in an unrelated carjacking earlier the same evening.
