Tips for Skin Care during the Winter

Skin protection and hydration are important, especially for seniors

MediNurse, St. Louis’ premier provider of private duty nursing care and health related services for four decades, recognizes that many individuals are concerned about changes in their skin as they age. Particularly in the winter weather, seniors may notice increased dryness in their skin which can lead to cracks and irritation if not properly moisturized. Additionally, they may notice their skin becoming thinner, how veins and bones are becoming more pronounced and how scratches or bruises are taking longer to heal. Fortunately, there are preventative measures seniors can take for healthy skin.

MediNurse lists tips for skin protection for seniors:

  • Drink plenty of liquids. A sense of thirst can decrease with age, but it’s important to hydrate by drinking water throughout the day.
  • Always apply sunscreen in the morning, even on days when it is overcast. While this won’t reverse visible signs of aging, it will help to prevent further damage.
  • Use a humidifier in your home, especially if the air feels dry.
  • Do not smoke. Smoking promotes lines and wrinkles, in addition to a host of other problems
  • Use a daily moisturizer, such as a lotion, cream or ointment.
  • Take fewer showers/baths and use a mild soap. Warm water is less drying than hot water. Better not to add bath oil to your water, as this can make the tub slippery.
  • Do not sun bathe. Years of sun tanning or extensive exposure to the sun may lead to more wrinkles, dryness, age spots and even cancer.
  • Check your skin at least once a month for changes, such as a new growth, a sore that doesn’t heal or a bleeding mole – and share any concern with your healthcare provider.
