📰 News we're reading

• Thriving Landscapes: What we learned from a summer of garden tours (explorebigsky.com) — Big Sky homeowners and gardeners just wrapped up a summer of local landscape tours focused on wildfire resilience, water conservation, and native plants, and organizers say the lessons apply year-round. Residents can still tap Alpenscapes' free guidebook, plant lists, site visits, and expert advice to create fire-wise, low-water yards that fit Big Sky's climate while staying beautiful and personal.

• Future Fisheries projects approved (mt.gov) — State fisheries officials just approved nearly $581,000 for 14 habitat projects, including a Gallatin River restoration effort in the Big Sky area. The work will reconnect streams to floodplains, improve trout spawning habitat, and upgrade diversion structures, leveraging almost $4 million in matching funds from landowners, agencies, and nonprofits across Montana.

• A warm, dry winter is likely—what that means for snowpack is harder to say (explorebigsky.com) — Snow experts say southwest Montana, including Big Sky, is likely headed for another warm, relatively dry El Niño winter, which could mean later ski openings, earlier spring melt, and tricky snowpack layers. Researchers explain how rain, sun crusts, and elevation differences—like dry powder up high and melting snow at the Big Sky base—could affect avalanche danger, water supplies, and driving conditions.
