The state transportation department says the project is needed to preserve the roadway, while a city council member cites heavy public opposition and major cost implications for rebuilding the nearby viaduct bridge.

• Beatrice Police probe early morning shooting (1011now.com subscription) — An early-morning shooting near 9th and Summit streets in Beatrice left a man in his early 30s hospitalized after police found him wounded on the grass along Summit Street. Officers canvassed the neighborhood at daybreak and interviewed nearby residents, but no other people were at the scene and authorities have not yet released the victim’s name or condition.
