📰 News we're reading
• Volleyball Recap: Fairbury Continues Home Dominance on Thursday (maxpreps.com) — Fairbury’s volleyball team continued its strong home run with a straight-set win over Fillmore Central, and now turns its attention to facing Beatrice in a tournament this Saturday. For Beatrice fans, that matchup offers a good early-October test against a hot Jeffs squad, with standout hitters and setters coming in on a five-game home winning streak.
• Nebraska counties got money meant to combat the opioid crisis. Some are spending it on Flock cameras and other police tools. (heartlandbeat.com) — Beatrice has spent nearly $3,000 of its opioid settlement money on SWAT training and travel, and is still deciding how to use the remaining $95,000-plus. The article raises questions about whether Beatrice and other Nebraska communities should steer these funds toward treatment, recovery services, and prevention instead of law enforcement tools like Flock cameras, K-9s, and tactical gear.
