📰 News we're reading

1. Nebraska U.S. Rep. Mike Flood is still doing town halls in 2026 — and facing hostile crowds. Why? (newsfromthestates.com) — Norfolk residents recently packed a town hall with Rep. Mike Flood, pressing him on medical marijuana, Trump-era policies, and the high cost of living. The sometimes-tense meeting highlighted growing frustration across Nebraska’s 1st District as Flood defends his record, promotes a housing bill, and faces challenges from Democrat Chris Backemeyer and prospective nonpartisan candidate Austin Ahlman.

2. Norfolk City Council gives blessing for zoning change (norfolkneradio.com) — Norfolk’s City Council has unanimously approved rezoning 715 West Norfolk Avenue from light industrial to central business, clearing the way for upstairs apartments over ground-floor commercial space. City Planner Val Grimes said the two-story, lot-filling building fits C-2 zoning better, even without on-site parking, potentially adding new downtown housing options.

3. Council advances south Norfolk redevelopment study (norfolkdailynews.com) — Norfolk’s City Council has unanimously advanced a redevelopment study that labels parts of south Norfolk as “blighted,” a key legal step toward targeting new investment and infrastructure upgrades there. The Planning Commission will now review the study before the council decides on specific redevelopment actions, which could shape housing, utilities, and future growth in that area of the city.

4. Norfolk Legion Seniors threaten late but fall to Lincoln Southeast (norfolkdailynews.com) — Norfolk’s Post 16 Seniors mounted a late rally but ultimately dropped an 8-3 home decision to Lincoln Southeast despite strong relief pitching and a flurry of late hits. The Juniors also struggled, falling 9-0 in a five-inning shutout as walks and wild pitches hurt the Norfolk staff. Coaches still praised both teams’ effort and late-inning competitiveness.

5. KBRX Area University of Nebraska Medical Center Graduates Receive Diplomas May 7th (kbrx.com) — UNMC recently held commencement ceremonies in several Nebraska cities, including Norfolk, where its Northern Division nursing students received diplomas. The story highlights KBRX-area graduates in nursing, dentistry, medicine, physical therapy, and doctoral programs, showcasing how many local students are completing health care degrees that could benefit communities like Norfolk and the surrounding region.
