🌱 Fatal Pedestrian Crash + Valley Student In National Spelling Bee

Here are the top three stories today in Las Vegas:

  1. On Friday morning, a pedestrian was fatally struck by a car in west Las Vegas. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the intersection of West Charleston Boulevard and Scholl Drive, near the College of Southern Nevada's Charleston campus. As of Friday evening, an investigation into the collision is ongoing. (KTNV 13 Action News Las Vegas)
  2. A Valley middle schooler will represent our city at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Seventh-grader Eric Goroza won the Nevada state spelling bee and will soon compete against over 200 other kids around the country in the national bee. Goroza says his ultimate goal is to make his parents proud: "It would really mean a lot, especially to my parents, if I won." (KTNV 13 Action News Las Vegas)
  3. A Las Vegas group that celebrates moms year-round is making this Mother's Day a little more special. Today from 9:00 a.m. to noon, Fit4Mom Las Vegas is hosting its annual Celebration of Moms, offering free stroller fitness classes, mini-spa treatments, and more.   • Following a two-vehicle crash this week that involved a Las Vegas City Councilmember, both drivers have been cited. Councilwoman Michele Fiore, running as a Republican for Nevada state treasurer, and the unidentified second driver were both injured in the collision. (Las Vegas Sun)
  • A Lake Tahoe cleanup effort has helped remove thousands of pounds of trash from the nearshore area. Staff and volunteers with Clean Up the Lake, who first took up the effort in 2021, are expected to complete the 72-mile cleanup on May 10. (Nevada Independent)
  • Meet your new best friend! These adorable, adoptable cats, dogs, and more are awaiting their forever homes at Las Vegas area shelters. (Las Vegas Patch)
