Here are the top three stories today in Las Vegas:

  1. The Clark County Commission is considering a proposal that would prohibit pet stores from selling cats and dogs, among other animals. According to Commissioner Michael Naft, there is an "oversupply of animals in our community," which he hopes will be alleviated by the measure. Local pet shop owners acknowledge that there is an overpopulation of animals in local shelters, but argue that the policy goes too far. "Banning responsible pet stores is not going to eliminate the true problem," says Vanessa Greene, who has worked at Petland for 11 years. (Las Vegas Sun)
  2. It's hard to have cold feet these days. According to a thermal image captured by NASA's ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station, the urban heat island effect in Las Vegas is hitting new heights. While the air may hit temperatures of up to 109, the pavement is reaching 122 degrees or even higher. According to researchers, some ways to alleviate that heat can be to plant trees and change the kind of pavement used in cities. (Las Vegas Review-Journal)
  3. Donors to Refuge For Women Las Vegas are being recognized in a beautiful way. The RFW Wall of Hope mural will feature a painted vine with leaves inscribed with donors' initials. It will also have drawings and painted bricks from graduates of the RFW program. To learn more about the program and see photos of the mural, click the link. (Nonprofit News.Vegas)
