🌱 Alumni Bid Farewell To High School + Reno Children Receive Boosters
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Reno.
Good morning, friends! It's Monday in Reno and I'm back in your inbox with everything that's fit to print about what's happening in town. Keep reading for the latest.
First, today's weather:
Sunshine mixing with clouds. High: 77 Low: 48.
📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Reno who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.
I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Reno Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.
Here are the top 3 stories in Reno today:
- Alumni, staff, and the community at large said goodbye to the Procter Hug High School campus Saturday. All those with fond memories of the school, which was built in 1968, roamed the campus and signed a farewell note on the library career center wall. Students will attend classes at a new campus in the fall, while Hug High's current site will become the new Debbie Smith CTE Academy, slated to open in 2024. (KOLO)
- The City of Reno is almost halfway finished with a micromobility project to make downtown safer for bicyclists, pedestrians, and others not traveling the roadways by car. The "pilot project" includes the installation of safety features, including two-way bike lanes and parking buffers, and it comes after the rollout of the city's new e-Scooters. The city says it will use the project to decide what micromobility efforts it wants to focus on in the future. (KRNV)
- The Washoe County Health District is providing COVID boosters to children who are between 5 and 11 years old after the CDC approved boosters for that age group late Thursday. The boosters, which the CDC says can further enhance or restore protection from the virus, are administered five months after the initial two-dose vaccine. Washoe County remains in the "low" range for COVID-19 level based on the CDC's community-level tracker, but health district officials said they are seeing an increase in new cases and test positivity rate. Today in Reno:
- American Sign Language Bird Walk - Virginia Lake (8:00 AM)
- Senior Artists Exhibit & Show - McKinley Arts And Culture (9:00 AM)
- Reno City Charter Committee Meeting - Reno City Hall (5:30 PM)
From my notebook:
- The Reno Fire Department held a "push-in" ceremony for Station 19's new engine. The engine, which the fire department says is a much-needed addition to the area, needs a name. Any ideas? (Facebook)
- Smithridge Elementary School students are honoring their teacher's memory with a rock garden. Friends and family of Sara Hescher, who passed away back in February, saw the finished garden Friday afternoon, which includes rocks decorated to represent the late fifth-grade teacher. (KOLO)
