The 5th Annual Dog Days of Summer Dance Festival returns to the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts August 14–16 for three unforgettable evenings celebrating the performing arts, homeless pets, and the incredible northern Nevada community.
Produced by the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, this FREE outdoor festival features a different lineup of spectacular local dance performances each night, delicious food trucks, local vendors, SPCA of Northern Nevada booths, the crowd-favorite Pup Parade featuring SPCA-NN alumni, and adoptable pets looking for loving homes.
More than just a dance festival, Dog Days of Summer brings our community together in support of two local nonprofits dedicated to enriching lives through the arts and animal welfare. Guests are invited to enjoy an incredible weekend of entertainment while raising awareness and support for SPCA of Northern Nevada's lifesaving work for pets and the people who love them.
August 14–16, 2026 E.L. Cord Plaza | Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts Plaza, vendors &amp; food trucks: 5:30 p.m. Performances: 7:30–9:30 p.m.
Guests are encouraged to arrive early, bring a blanket or low-back lawn chair, and make a night of it. Admission is free, and donations supporting SPCA-NN will be accepted throughout the weekend.

Blackwood Canyon SNO-PARK

The Sierra is full of wild food — if you know how to see it. Spend an afternoon foraging your way up Blackwood Canyon, learning to find and identify the edible plants growing along the creek and across the meadows: which ones you can eat, which parts, when they're ready, and how to gather without harming the plant or the place.
We'll move slowly and hands-on, keying out wild greens, berries, and edible flowers as we go. Where a plant carries a medicinal story too, we'll dig into it — through both Western herbalism and the energetics of Chinese medicine — but the through-line is learning to read this landscape as a pantry. Expect a guided plant sit, a straight-talking conversation about ethical and sustainable harvesting in the Tahoe basin, and the folklore and food history behind each species.
No experience needed. Curious first-timers and seasoned foragers both leave knowing more than they came with — and recognizing wild edibles they've walked past for years.

 Dr. Elena Roemer, L.Ac and Brian Wallace, Certified California 
Naturalist, as we explore the edible and medicinal plants of the Lake 
Tahoe basin through both Western herbal actions and Chinese medicine 
energetics, while weaving in local ecology, plant folklore, and seasonal
 rhythms. We’ll focus on learning how to truly see and relate to 
plants—how to identify them, understand their properties, and approach 
harvesting with respect and restraint. The walk includes a guided plant 
sit and discussion of ethical wildcrafting, as well as gaining a clear 
understanding of when to harvest, while inviting a grounded, embodied 
relationship with the living landscape.
