Here are the top three stories today in Reno:
- The Reno City Council has denied an appeal from the Nevada SPCA regarding Reno Iron Works' proposed construction next to the shelter. The SPCA expressed concerns about how the noise, vibration, and dust from construction and facility operations would impact the animals' health. After reviewing all the information, the council voted 4-3 in favor of affirming the Planning Commission's approval of the Reno Iron Works project. (KOLO)
- Calling all green thumbs: Washoe County is recruiting volunteer gardeners for Reno's Rancho San Rafael Park. Participants will have the chance to grow vegetables and flowers, pull weeds, water the plants, and more. Planting starts the week of May 15; anyone interested in signing up can do so at the county website. (KRNV)
- The new omicron variant is causing a rise in COVID-19 cases in the Reno area, according to Washoe County District Health Officer Kevin Dick. According to Dick, the region has seen an approximately 50 percent increase in positive cases from last week to this week, and testing at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center is also seeing increased demand. Thankfully, hospitalization rates remain low, and overall cases remain in the "low range" as per the CDC. (This Is Reno)
