Here are the top three stories today in Reno:

  1. A new dean has been named for the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine. Dr. Paul Hauptman, M.D., will begin his appointment on Oct. 17. He is a nationally recognized investigator in outcomes assessment in advanced heart failure. Currently, he is the dean at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Graduate School of Medicine. The University President Brian Sandoval said that "Dr. Hauptman has an impeccable background" and welcomed him to the Wolf Pack family. (Nevada Today)
  2. Aerial mosquito treatments were performed around Washoe County on Thursday morning. The treatment is part of the Washoe County Health District's vector-borne disease program. The spray on Thursday was the third mosquito treatment of the season, aimed at preventing viruses like West Nile that can affect human and horse populations. 3. The Washoe County Board of Commissioners approved a $5.5 million purchase of the Cares Campus on Tuesday. Washoe County attorney Mary Kandaras said that the county currently leases, but wanted to purchase the property for expansion and improvements. The agreement also included a $350,000 subgrant for the Reno Housing Authority to be used for affordable housing.
