Here are the top three stories today in Reno:

  1. Bad umpire calls may become a thing of the past at Greater Nevada Field. The Reno Aces will begin using an automated ball and strike system to create a digital strike zone during baseball games. The system will notify the umpire during the game and a human-operated component will confirm the information. Human umpires will still be used for foul tips, checked swings, bounced balls, plate plays, and fair ball calls. (Reno Gazette Journal)
  2. A group of Reno-based clergy has called on Starbucks to stop charging extra for vegan milk alternatives. The group is composed of Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, and Jewish leaders. The group claims that the extra charge is effectively a tax on those who choose to live a plant-based lifestyle. (Nevada Appeal)
  3. The Reno Public Market will likely open in late summer or early fall after experiencing delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The market is located at the corner of Plumb Lane and South Virginia Street in the former location of Shoppers Square. The space will have areas for retail, a stage for performers, and an art collective showcase. (KOLO)

  • May Arboretum Society Spring Plant Sale At Reno Arboretum (8:00 AM)

From my notebook:

  • The SPCA of Northern Nevada highlights Wonder. This goofy dog does not let its disability keep it down. Click to learn how to adopt from the shelter or donate. (Facebook)
  • The Reno Police Department warns the community of an ongoing scam occurring throughout the area. Callers are notifying residents of unpaid tickets and requesting payment over the phone. Become informed and don't get scammed. (Facebook)
  • Picasso spent time in the coastal region of southern France after World War II. The Nevada Museum of Art is displaying one of the pieces Picasso made while working there. (Facebook)
