Here are the top three stories today in Reno:
- Reno residents gathered to celebrate World Refugee Day on Saturday. Nearly 100 people were in attendance for the celebration, which was hosted by Northern Nevada International Center, an agency that aids with refugee resettlement in Northern Nevada. The agency provides various resources to those in need, such as temporary housing, getting kids into schools, helping people get jobs, and access to Medicaid. (Reno Gazette Journal)
- The Reno Fire Department and its partners will utilize goats for wildfire prevention. For the second consecutive year, The Reno Fire Department (RFD), NV Energy, and the Nevada Division of Forestry have partnered to reduce the risk of wildfire in Reno in the lower Rosewood Canyon through targeted goat grazing. Goats from High Desert Graziers in Smith Valley, Nevada will be grazing on approximately 30 acres of City-owned property to remove flammable vegetation, thus reducing the amount of fuels available to burn during a wildfire, and accomplishing the objective in a sustainable manner. (Press Release Desk)
- Police have arrested a suspect involved in the Reno City Hall shooting that happened earlier this month. Thanks to a tip from Secret Witness, the Reno Police Department (RPD) was able to locate and arrest the suspect involved — 29-year-old Javarion Phillips. Phillips was arrested on Jun. 17 in connection with the city hall shooting and was booked with multiple charges. (KRNV)
