PETERBOROUGH, NH — A Peterborough man who died after a July 5 altercation between neighbors on Grove Street was killed by multiple gunshot wounds and his death has been ruled a homicide, according to an update from New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella.
The update said police responded to a 911 call at about 8 p.m. Sunday for a reported altercation involving two adult neighbors outside their residences in Peterborough. Responding officers found Jack Hutchings, 24, of Peterborough, dead with apparent gunshot wounds.
Another man, identified as an off-duty police officer with the Peterborough Police Department, was found with apparent stab/incised wounds. Witness reported the off-duty officer was at home with his family and was outside with young children when the incident occurred. During the event, the off-duty officer suffered multiple stab/incised wounds.
The attorney general's update said he has since been released from the hospital.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy of Hutchings earlier this week.
Hutchings' death was caused by multiple gunshot wounds, and the manner of death is homicide.
“As used by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, homicide is defined as the killing of one person by another,” the update said.
The investigation remains active and is being handled by the New Hampshire Department of Justice and New Hampshire State Police. Investigators are also examining whether the person who shot Hutchings acted in self-defense or defense of others.
The attorney general's office said all parties have been identified and have been cooperative in the investigation.
“Additional information will be released as it becomes available while protecting the integrity of the investigation,” the update said.
