Hatchet Man from Amherst Arrested Again
Police pick up Matthew Merrill for August crash; he was previous arrested for an altercation in Merrimack.

A local man who was out on bail is facing a driving charge after a crash on Brookside Drive.
Matthew Merrill, 24, of Cub Circle in Amherst, was arrested on Sept. 13, and charged with conduct after an accident and breach of bail conditions.
According to police, at around 10 p.m. on Aug. 22, officers were called to Brookside Drive in Merrimack for a report of a motor vehicle that had gone off the road. When the officers arrived, they found the vehicle had driving into a tree but no one was in the area of the accident. The vehicle had “extensive front end damage.” The driver of the vehicle did not file a report with police or contact the property owner about damage to the tree, two violations of state law.

“Further investigation revealed that Merrill was a possible suspect/driver in the incident,” according to Lt. M. Tarleton. “Upon locating and questioning Merrill days after the incident, it was confirmed that he was in fact the driver involved.”
Police also learned that Merrill was out on bail for the Aug. 4, felony criminal threatening charge involving an incident on Continental Boulevard on Aug. 4, with a hatchet.
