Saber Girls Are Back-To-Back Champions!

The girls varsity basketball team won the NHIAA Division II State Championship game against Kearsarge High on Friday.

Souhegan basketball saw another triumph this year after the girls varsity team took the championship game after an impressive second half.

The girls won 53-27 against Kearsarge High School at the NHIAA Division II State Championship game at SNHU on Friday.

Coach Jeremy Faulkner said that his team overcame a shaky first quarter through a shift in their offensive strategy with increased fast breaks and offensive pressure.

Mickenzie Larrivee was the star player in this championship game. She scored a game-high 16 points and scored her first career three-pointer.

“Mickenzie had the game of her life, said Faulkner.

Ashley Tighe was also a defensive powerhouse with eight steals and made her mark on the scoreboard with nine assists during the game.

Faulkner said the team had a rough start at the beginning of the year, but really gained momentum towards the championship win. This year, the team went 14-4 in their regular season.

“It was a nice way for our seniors to go out on top,” he said. The team will lose seven seniors this year, with four of them being starters.

Parent Lori Bruno said that coming off an undefeated state championship season last year, the team must have felt like they had a target on their back Prior to last year’s championship win, the girls team had a fifteen-year drought.

She said that their coach has really brought the team together since he took the position last year. He has inspired the girls to hone their skills throughout the season and given them the confidence to win.

“He should get coach of the year,” said Bruno.
